šŸ„Introducing... Intentional Breakout Groups

What they are, how they work, + why you'll love 'em....

Hey folks! Ece, our wonderful Community Events + Ops Lead just went live with something super cool that I wanted to share with you.

First, some context:

Communities are hard. But we know thereā€™s immense value that can be found in great ones. Weā€™re all part of, candidly, probably too many. Weā€™re maxxed out in terms of how much we can contribute + collaborate. So GW has been noodling on a way to do this better.

How many online communities are you a part of?

Ā šŸ„Ā Introducing:

Generalist World Intentional Breakouts

What are they? Small, private groups within the Generalist World community, who come together around a shared intention.

Over 10 to 30 days, these groups embark on a focused journey, aiming to achieve their collective goals with the help of peer support.

We provide templates and guidance for volunteers who want to form a group.

Why Should You Join?

  • Casual and secure space for deepening connections, fostering collaboration, and exploring new paths

  • Progress towards your shared goals

  • Strengthen your bonds within the GW community

  • Collaborate in sprints, rather than long stretches

  • Connect with the exact kinda people doing similar stuff to you

Eceā€™s created an amazing step-by-step guide for how to get involved

šŸ˜ (Unsurprisingly) GW folks are diving right on in..

So cool to see GW members getting involved right away. Our first breakouts are:

  1. For all the techie generalists...Programming Intentional Breakout Group: a virtual meet-up group for developers (of any skill level) to focus on their own independent project or skill of choice.

    Ā

šŸ‘‰ļøĀ Intention: Help keep ourselves accountable, develop our technical communication skills, learn from one another, and grow our network. At the end, we can showcase our work and endorse each other on LinkedIn!

šŸ‘‰ļøĀ Time-frame & check-in frequency: 1 month to start, meet 1-2 times per week or however long it takes to talk about and share our work. Starting July 1st.

  2. A group for people who have a discrete task they want to finish but have been putting off / procrastinating.

šŸ‘‰ļø I took Courseraā€™s Google Project Management Certificate course and I completed all the lectures and assignments but have been procrastinating doing the capstone to get my certificate.

šŸ‘‰ļø It shouldnā€™t take more than a few weeks to complete but itā€™s a lot of brain work and Iā€™d love to get an accountability group together with people procrastinating in a similar way

If youā€™re a GW member already, simply click on the breakout group youā€™d like to join. If youā€™re not a member already, but would like to become one, click here.

Howā€™s that sound? šŸ’ƒĀ The tl;dr: to help you connect more deeply with folks on a similar journey, for a set period of time. Hopefully, this can help reduce overwhelm that being a human on the internet often drums up whilst also helping you smash some personal or professional goals. Yahoo!

šŸ˜ƒ Soooo, what do you think?
